The Problem

The primary problem we aim to address is food insecurity and the lack of education around healthy eating habits in our community. Many of our students live in a food desert, where access to fresh, nutritious food is limited. This contributes to poor dietary choices and health outcomes. Through our gardening club, we seek to tackle this issue by teaching students the importance of healthy eating, how to grow their own food, and ways to create sustainable gardens at home. By growing and sharing fresh produce, we aim to improve access to nutritious food while empowering students and their families with the knowledge and skills needed to combat food insecurity.

Our Plan

Students at Frank L. Stanton Elementary School will participate in a gardening club designed to grow vegetables and promote health within our school and community. Our students live in a food desert and face challenges related to food insecurity. The club aims to teach students about healthy eating habits, the importance of sustainable spaces, and practical ways to combat food insecurity. Additionally, we plan to share the produce with our cafeteria staff to incorporate into school meals, providing fresh, nutritious options for students. The remaining food will be distributed to student families and the broader community, fostering a sense of support and collaboration.
