The Problem
We are in the midst of year two of our Start with Hello campaign--Inspired by the Sandy Hook Promise Start with Hello campaign and our own school mission to follow the three B’s--be kind, respectful and responsible, our students have been working on combating social isolation and loneliness in a joint effort with another fifth grade class. Kids have created posters, brochures, poems and multi-media presentations to share their knowledge and solutions to help all members of our school community feel included, come together, accept people with differences and build empathy. They even TWICE presented a musical to the school community where they shared original artwork, writing and their musical talents--singing, dancing and playing instruments to songs with positive social messages. They will implement more special initiatives they came up with including positive post it day, creating public service announcements, their own blog, website that shares their kind acts, kind acts they witnessed and teaching others about important problems plaguing their local and global communities while trying to come up with solutions. It is also our year long mission to do whatever we can to build empathy, community and focus on everything that makes us one.
