Engaging the Whole School in Community Service Activities, infants through adults

The Problem

The main goal of this project is to effectively engage the whole school community, from the infants and toddlers through the entire elementary and middle school program, and all the teachers, administrators, and parents, in active participation in community service activities to benefit the school, the community, and people around the world in meaningful ways through collective actions as a school community. We will do this through offering a number of opportunities for different types of participation in projects benefiting different groups in different ways over the course of the year. We will give them the opportunity to participate in making stones for the Kindness Rocks project, to participate in a Food Drive for the local food pantry around MLK Jr. Day including a curriculum about hunger and poverty during the drive, and a chance to make cards and pictures for children in the hospital. Additionally, we are beig partnered with a Sister School in Northern Syria which serves children who have been displaced by the violence of the war, and many of whom are orphans, and we will do on-going projects in relation to the sister school relationship.

Our Plan

We will be doing the project from Nov. 15, 2016 - May 15, 2017 and perhaps beyond that as well. We will do it using a student-led leadership model where we plan each aspect of the project and its implementation and then evaluate as we go.
