The Problem
The beautiful Perhentian Islands are situated in a marine park in the North of Malaysia. The islands are a popular tourism destination and are famous for snorkeling and diving. Marine life however is endangered due to several reasons: inappropriate snorkel behaviour is one of them. All students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Pulau Perhentian are daily exposed to tourism on one hand and to marine life on the other. Most of them have been told about the threats marine life is facing, but they don't know exactly why and how. They chose 'eco-snorkeling' as their next project to become heroes and save their sea. Being the facilitators of this project, our wish is for the students to understand why and how marine life around the islands is threatened. Second we wish for them to feel (more) responsible for the ocean's health and we wish for them to share their knowledge and skills. They will remember their Roots & Shoots classes and become eco-snorkel guides, members of the marine park or simply a friendly 'local' who advises his or her peers on how to be eco-friendly.
