The Problem

Changing any community is a long-term and multi-generational endeavor. In the case of Denver's Sun Valley public housing neighborhood, the neighborhood children began the change a few years ago with a Roots & Shoots mini-grant. They started by saving abandoned animals on the very streets where they live. (please see the photos). To date, they have saved over 30 animal lives and inspired the adults around them - grandparents, parents, and public housing employees alike. As the Sun Valley neighborhood undergoes demolition and transition to new housing, a more strategic effort is needed to support 300 plus families over the next few years.

Our Plan

This Roots & Shoots campaign will a) support families keep their pets as they transition to new housing and b) if families can no longer keep their pets, community children and their parents and grandparents will support them in various ways to minimize the dumping of animals on to the streets and the emotional toll of giving up a family pet.
