The Problem

Declining tree cover and limited reforestation efforts continue to contribute to climate change, poor air quality, and loss of biodiversity. Our community needs more simple and organized ways for people to help plant trees and take part in long-term environmental efforts.

Our Plan

Through Deep Roots, we run a student-led project focused on raising money and planting trees to help the environment. We organize fundraising efforts in the community, and the money raised goes toward tree planting. We also lead planting drives where students and volunteers take part in planting trees. This work is ongoing and continues to grow as more people get involved. Our goal is to create real environmental impact while encouraging students to take responsibility for sustainability.

Here is how the project went:

On Earth Day 2024, I organized a tree planting event in my neighborhood with 3 volunteers. Together we planted 10 trees to help improve our local environment. This was Deep Roots Community Foundation's first planting event and the start of our ongoing reforestation efforts in Delaware.

Through this project I/we learned:

Through this project I learned that small actions can make a real difference. Planting trees in my own neighborhood showed me that environmental impact starts locally.

What I/we might change:

If I did this again, I would set a bigger goal. Planting 10 trees felt like a lot at the time but now I know we are capable of much more

My/our favorite part of this project was:

Actually putting the trees in the ground and seeing the immediate impact of our work.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

The hardest part is starting. Once you plant that first tree, the rest follows naturally.
