Changes in Los Angeles Impact on Natural Resources of the Urban Ecosystem

  • Location
    Los Angeles, California
  • Status
    Active

The Problem

As part of an extension of the current ecology unit our classroom will be learning about the natural resources available in their local community. The project will focus on the impact the current developments in the city of Los Angeles and migration of new residents has had or will have on the urban ecosystem and the natural resources that are needed in order to sustain the current and future population of living organisms that make the city of Los Angeles. Students will learn how they as consumers and their families have or will have to adapt to the current and future change their local community is having and come up with an action plan that will help them thrive in their ever changing urban ecosystem.

Our Plan

Students will research the historical changes of their local community and create a timeline starting from the early 20th century to the present. This timeline will contain data (population change related to humans, wildlife and plant life), in addition to focusing on the impact the developments has had in their local environment (pollution, shortage of essential natural resources, animal extinction, etc.). Students will create action plan in the form of a PSA, which will include findings during the unit as well as an action plan.
