The Problem
We want to raise awareness about the threats to the Mexican axolotl, a species endemic to the waterways of Xochimilco and other Mexican wetlands. Through literacy and STEAM activities, we hope to both expand knowledge and awareness of the axolotl while bringing STEAM activities to under-served children on Chicago\'s southwest side community. The children in those communities are predominantly Mexican/Mexican-American. Their school show lower than average academic progress and fewer school resources. Activities such as these will bring a fun learning experience and inspire them to pursue further literacy, art, and education opportunities.
Our Plan
We will be working with area author, Claudia Guadalupe Martinez and the Chicago Herpatological Society to bring new information and facts about the axolotl, a beloved animal, to children and families. We will provide an animal interaction experience with small reptiles and educate children and families on the realities of keeping axolotls as pets. In addition, we will highlight efforts to conserve the axolotl in Mexico and like reptiles in Illinois. We will highlight the work of MOJA (Movimiento de Jóvenes por el Agua, A.C.), an environmental organization founded in 2012 with the objective of promoting sustainable development initiatives in rural and urban communities, promoting conservation, care of biodiversity and natural forest resources. , wetlands and coastal areas. As a community, we will make a pledge to support continued education about conservation, the axolotl, and pass an optional donation bucket to collect funds in support of the work of MOJA.
