The Problem
Our school has a career closet with business professional/casual attire that students may check out for free to wear to professional organization events, interviews, class presentations, etc. Many students are unable to afford business clothes, which makes it difficult for them to gain employment, join student organizations that have meeting dress codes and professional conferences, or succeed classes which requires professional dress for projects. When I joined the business program, I spent nearly $400 purchasing the business clothing I needed for my marketing organization and courses. Many student cannot afford to purchase business wear outright and may only need outfits a few times a semester, so the closet can be a great resource. The career closet relies solely on donations and while it has a wide selection of menswear, it has almost no women's business clothing. I would like to resolve this disparity since our business program is almost 50% female, so there is a great need for access to free women's business clothing. I would like to purchase gently used pieces from Goodwill stores and run a business clothing drive with our school’s marketing organization to expand the women’s clothing collection in the career closet.
