The Problem
Adjacent to our playground area behind the school there were 3 large planters filled with weeds. We wanted to beautify the space and create a place for students to garden.

To work on this project we need to clean and clear the planters of weeds. Replace the soil in the containers. Students need to make a plan for the types of plants that would best survive under the conditions where the planters are located. Last we need to obtain the plants and get to work planting them.
The project went GREAT! The students were so excited to make the space look better and plant flowers. They weren't even put off by the weed pulling and soil preparation step.
I learned once again that children learn so much better when they are engaged and connected to the natural world.
If we did this project again we probably should make a plan for the area around the planters. There are still weeds there. It would also be great to add plantings around the white birch trees that are also located in that area.
All of it! Watching how excited the students were to get their hands dirty and how proud they were of the results.
Plan groupings of students ahead of time.
