The Problem
AndOneSports—an initiative I started just over a year ago. Our focus is around sports and play equity, which basically means we want to make sure every kid, no matter where they come from or what their background is, has the chance to play. So, why does this matter? Why should we care about sports equity? Well, think about it. A lot of us grew up playing on teams, going to games, traveling while on club teams, making friends through sports. But a lot of kids, especially those from underrepresented communities, miss out on these experiences because they don’t have access to the gear, organized leagues, or coaching that they need to get involved. And that’s a big deal because sports are more than just w’s and losses. For me, sports gave me an identity for years and helped me build relationships, improve my mindset, and create that feeling of belonging, which every kid should have. An equity approach matthers because it recognizes each person has different circumstances and needs, meaning different groups of people need different resources and opportunities in order to thrive.
