The Problem
Many children spend the 4th of July in the hospital, instead of at barbecues, fireworks, and family celebrations. I wanted to do something to bring patriotic fun, smiles, and celebration directly to them.
Many children spend the 4th of July in the hospital, instead of at barbecues, fireworks, and family celebrations. I wanted to do something to bring patriotic fun, smiles, and celebration directly to them.
The action was to create 4th of July gift bags to donate to hospitals across the country. The gift bags have fun activities to allow children to be able to feel festive and included in the holiday, even though they are in the hospital. The gift bags included 4th of July themed : star sunglasses, coloring book and markers, butter squishy, stickers, flower lei necklaces, and a rubber duck.
55 volunteers put together 320 holiday gift bags that were delivered to 12 pediatric hospitals in 6 states, helping bring comfort and holiday cheer to children spending the 4th of July in the hospital.
Through this project, I learned that even small acts of kindness become something much bigger when people work together. By organizing volunteers across multiple locations, we were able to reach hundreds of children and show them they are supported by their communities.
We would start collecting supplies even earlier and recruit additional volunteers so we could assemble and deliver even more holiday gift bags to children's hospitals across the country.
My favorite part was seeing so many volunteers of all ages volunteer to help with a shared purpose and knowing that each completed gift bag would brighten a child's hospital stay during the holidays.
Small personal touches can make a big difference for the children receiving the bags. Each bag had a 4th of July picture on it which volunteers colored to make it more personal for each child who recieved the gift bag.
