Here is how the project went:
This project went so well! We had children, parents and teachers join in for the planting and they were all so focused, inquisitive and excited to learn about the plants and the various wildlife it supports!
Through this project I/we learned:
Installing a school garden requires a commitment to maintain it long term, but with a great group of volunteers and continuing education to keep children, staff and families interested and inspired, will ensure that the project remains successful!
What I/we might change:
If we have an opportunity to expand, I would include more shrubs and native edible landscapes.
My/our favorite part of this project was:
Without question it's the amount of positive feedback and excitement from all of the children who saw it's progress and participated in the planting. It almost brought me to tears hearing about their favorite plants and insects, how they can't read to sit on the logs to read and even hearing "This is going to be SO beautiful!" made every bit of work 10000% worth it!
Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:
Be sure to include fun elements like wood logs, painted rocks, signs and find ways to incorporate the garden into school science, art and math activities.
