The Problem

To educate children with special needs about different cultures and that we are all different and that's ok.

Our Plan

We had an African cultural group from Ghana in to talk to our children who have special needs behaviourally and emotionally about life in their home town in Ghana. The children saw costumes, heard music, experienced ritual dances and learned about general everyday life for these people. We discussed how there are many differences throughout the world and also that is OK to be different. It was hard for some of them to accept the fact that these people were so different from themselves but it also sparked very interesting and confrontational discussions amongst the students and staff. We are working towards acceptance of things that are different and Bing tolerant to those who think, feel, act and look different from ourselves.
