The Problem

Building on the legacy and vision of Dr. Jane Goodall to place the power and resources for creating practical solutions to big challenges in the hands of our students, we at JHS 227 believe that by creating a “STEAM Garden” we can extend the walls of our school through trans-discipline collaboration. Our STEAM Garden will provide the opportunity for our school to collaborate together utilizing an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem solving and embrace collaboration.

Our Plan

JHS227 will collaborately establish an inter-disciplinary school garden. We are starting with 22 Simplicity rose bushes that were established last spring in our schoolyard. Our goal is to increase the biodiversity of our concrete jungle by supporting our pollinators. We are researching the types of plants and or shrubs we can plant in and around our already established raised beds. The plants need to be Bee, Butterfly and Bird friendly. We are also creating a more esthetically pleasing and student friendly green space.
