The Problem

The CEOS (Community Educational Outreach Service) Garden Club, WVU Extension Morgan County, and the Morgan County 4-H Pioneers Club have partnered to work on a fully ADA accessible Monarch Waystation inside the 9/11 Memorial Universal Garden (Morgan County\'s first ADA accessible garden) they are building. There is a serious lack of ADA accessible locations, businesses, or public spaces in Morgan County, WV. Additionally, Morgan County is currently in the middle of building a new by-pass which has wreaked havoc on our monarch populations. By combining an ADA gardening project with a Monarch Waystation, both the Garden Club and the 4-H Pioneers hope to combat the stigma of ADA accessible places in our community while simultaneously aiding in the repopulation of monarchs in our county.

Our Plan

Our partnership is planting a 25 foot long, 4 foot deep Monarch Waystation that runs along the south facing, full sun fence line to the 9/11 Memorial Universal Garden. This garden will contain native milkweed, butterfly weed, and at least ten other monarch friendly plant varieties. It include plants suitable for nighttime shelter. Companion plants will be included to manage pests and diseases as this garden will be primarily a no spray/ no pesticide monarch habitat. We will install adequate water access with a nearby water installation, such as a small fountain or pond. This garden will be managed by 4-H members ages 5-21 and Garden Club members. We intend to register the garden as an official waystation on MonarchWatch.org.
