The Problem

The mission of the Acworth Community Garden is to address food insecurity for some of our seniors. Everything we grow is donated. We depend on volunteers to plant, harvest & maintain the garden. No one receives a salary or compensation. The R&S money enables us to have an extra planting season in the early spring - Feb/March. This increases the amount of produce donated to our seniors in need. Before receiving the R&S money we could not afford to do an early spring planting - potatoes, greens, root crops & brassicas. We also provide educational opportunities.

Our Plan

To purchase supplies for early spring planting - compost, potato starts, vegetable seeds, zinnia seeds (prep for summer).

Here is how the project went:

It was great - we started at the beginning of March and have done several harvests - year to date total = 308.25. All participants had a great time - different people come on different days.

Through this project I/we learned:

We have to adjust, sometimes for weather and availability of volunteers.

What I/we might change:

We plan on doing it again - this is our 3rd year of early planting thanks to Roots and Shoots

My/our favorite part of this project was:

The harvest! Having kids in the garden.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:
