The Problem

Continual child abuse and ack of awareness on recognizing the early signs of child abuse, as well as problems within the foster care system in the United States.

Our Plan

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Marymount University has many programs that prepare our country's future social workers, child court advocates, doctors, teachers, and law enforcement. With that, one of the best ways to prevent continual child abuse is for individuals who work with children to know the early signs. On April 12th, the Blue Ribbon Project director will provide a free, four-hour seminar to any interested Marymount students. This training, which is also provided to professionals, will help our future professionals better support youth wherever they choose to work post-graduation. During April, we also plan to place flags around campus that acknowledge April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Child abuse is best prevented when it is discussed, so we hope to facilitate these conversations in our campus community.

Here is how the project went:

The training was strong and the discussions that resulted were productive. Attending students came from all different undergraduate and graduate academic programs and multiple faculty members attended as well. Our graduate students were primarily interested in forensic work, education, and social psychology, while our undergraduate students were primarily interested in education, political science, psychology, and criminal justice, all of which are fields that were addressed during the training.

Through this project I/we learned:

The importance of working with a team and collaborating effectively, and that working for causes that are important to us is better and more rewarding when you are working with others.

What I/we might change:

We would have offered multiple trainings that would have been more specific to areas of academic interest.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

Seeing the event come together the way it did!

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Set deadlines that will help you stay on target and accomplish your goals.
