The Problem

We have a group of 41 students in Kamala, Uganda who are keen to study and don't have the money to continue. Without help, they will be forced to find jobs, or for the females, will be facing being sent to marry without even a basic education completed.

Our Plan

We want to continue holding fundraisers, selling used books and toys and raising money to support this group of kids. We have raised funds for the 2024 and 2025 school years and we want to see these 41 students able to finish their upper primary and secondary schooling as long as they are wanting to work towards their education.

Here is how the project went:

It was pretty intense. We had to ask a lot of people to collaborate in sharing our fundraising page. In the end, we have been able to cover the education costs for all 41 students for 2026 AND one more to finish this year, whose mother passed away 2 weeks ago and lost her exam fees in trying to cover hospital expenses.

Through this project I/we learned:

The more you can feel comfortable talking about it, the better the chance the word spreads and then people help. We sometimes have to have conversations more than once for people to take action.

What I/we might change:

We will try to share more personal information about why this matters so much to us. Be very clear about the costs and target with exchange rates and fees ahead of time to set a more accurate goal.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

Meeting the goal and knowing how many dozens of people were willing to help

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Having a prepared thank you response and be ready to share updates seemed to help a lot!
