The Problem

Pollinator populations are declining worldwide. This includes native honey bees, butterflies, and more. The decline is a serious concern due to the vital role pollinators play in food production and ecosystem health. Pollinator hotels offer crucial nesting sites for solitary bees and other pollinators, helping to boost their populations and enhance pollination in gardens and urban areas. These structures provide safe spaces for bees to lay eggs, overwinter, and find shelter from the elements and predators, contributing to biodiversity and supporting ecosystems.

Our Plan

A workshop for elementary school kids, teaching them about the importance of native pollinators and allowing them to build their own take home pollinator hotels.

Here is how the project went:

We had around 20 elementary school students and 5 volunteers at the workshop. The students first learned about native and invasive species, and the harm that invasives cause to our ecosystems. and played a game where they guessed if an animal or plant was native or invasive. They learned about bee hotels and then built their own to put in their yards.

Through this project I/we learned:

We learned how to keep younger students engaged and interested in learning about the environment, and what strategies work when helping students in a hands on project.

What I/we might change:

We might have a more guided hands on part of the workshop, and give the students more of a structured task.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

My favorite part was how enthusiastic the students were to learn about endangered animals and how excited they were to help bees with their bee hotels.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Kids love when they get to participate in their learning, and don't just have someone talking at them!
