Our Plan

We will provide painted pots with herbs and seeds so that people get to grow some of their own cooking ingredients.

Here is how the project went:

The project was a success and we distributed 570 pots in total. 400 pots were distributed among 4 Lanark Park produce distributions and 170 pots from 3 Roots & Shoots events. We had a lot of scholars attend pot painting workshops to prepare for the distributions. People were happy to receive their herbs and children enjoyed painting their pots to plant the seeds of their choice.

Through this project I/we learned:

A lesson we learned is that the process doesn't have to be perfect to work. We faced a few challenges and learned to adapt. I figured out new ways to use my management skills and remembered how valuable teamwork is.

What I/we might change:

We can make some modifications to the project and they may include using recycled items as pots, giving out sprouted herbs we grow, having a plant care informant at distributions, and providing new types of herbs. I want to focus on managing the project so I will be recruiting scholars to work with me. Specific roles will be assigned to people with the intention of promoting teamwork and dividing the responsibilities.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

My favorite thing about this project was seeing people get excited about the types of herbs available and the designs painted on the pots. It might be something simple, but I'm sure giving these plants made many people happy. My second favorite thing about this project is that it inspired some students to start their own community projects.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

A fun fact is that we designed a plant guide brochure that includes basic information about how to care for the herbs. In addition to getting an herb and receiving care instructions people probably learned that they need to be patient with the growth of plants.
