The Problem

Clean office paper is one of the easiest materials to recycle. Schools use a lot of paper, and too much of it still goes in the trash. One ream is 500 sheets. Our goal of one million sheets equals about 2,000 reams, roughly five tons of paper. That is on the order of 80–100 trees and several dumpsters of material that could be recycled. A big share of what gets tossed is clean, single-sided classroom and office paper. Each sheet recycled saves fiber for new paper products and paper fibers can be recycled 5–7 times before they wear out.We want to keep that out of Loudoun County landfills and turn it back into new paper instead.

Our Plan

We will run a full-scale paper recycling project to save one million sheets by December 31, 2025. We will recruit teachers and office staff to host clearly labeled paper-only bins in school classrooms and offices, set a regular pickup schedule, and track totals by location. We will share monthly progress and expand to interested small businesses in Loudoun County. The goal is simple: make it easy to recycle clean paper everywhere in the school community and hit one million sheets saved.
