The Problem

Kewanee is a low-income community that is considered to be a food desert in some census tracts throughout the city. Hunger and food insecurity are two big issues within the community, especially for older adults and young children.

Our Plan

With the holidays and winter coming up, our scouts want to \\\"Pack the Pantry\\\" in Kewanee to help out the community! Our troop plans to match all funds received either with donations or financially.

Here is how the project went:

"Really good! We filled my mom's trunk and still had two more shopping carts with food. Like the top and bottom of the carts!"

Through this project I/we learned:

That our food pantry provides food for people outside of our community and many of our community members go to other pantries in the county. They are short on food many months and do not get money to keep going other than donations.

What I/we might change:

Collect longer to give more food! Ask to help out when people come to pick up items.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

The happy volunteers. They were so happy that we brought lots of cereal because they ran out. They gave us a popsicle.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Think of people who might not have water or electricity. If a food needs other things like oil or milk buy them too or get something else. People like snacks too not just canned vegetables and noodles.
