The Problem

Students were seeking ways to reduce carbon emissions in Chicago by increasing the amount of native plants in buildings. They researched and found local native plants and plants that sequester high amounts of carbon. They used the seek app to uncover that there are very few native plants in our area eventhough there are many large, curated gardens and parks.

Our Plan

Students organized a giveaway day in April. They plan on growing native plant seedlings and creating organic fertilizer to give away to our neighbors.

Here is how the project went:

It went well! People were excited to learn more about native plants and Keystone species.

Through this project I/we learned:

We learned how little the public knows about native plants. Our student community knows so much, but there is a knowledge gap of what the public knows about pollinator stewardship and carbon sequestration.

What I/we might change:

Definitely change the bottles for the fertilizer! the first ones leaked.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

Talking to people about the plants.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Consider the timing of when your plants will be delivered. We didn't realize our plants would arrive so late in the year.
