Here is how the project went:

This project went incredibly well! Students learn about healthy foods, how to grow foods in various climates with hydroponics, and they researched how hydroponics can help solve problems in growing food. They also learned valuable life skills by growing, harvesting, and cooking with their produce.

Through this project I/we learned:

Students learned how to plan, grow, harvest, and cook with food. They also learned about problems people have growing food, and they researched ways to solve those problems. Students also learned valuable English language, academic vocabulary, speaking, and writing skills surrounding science content language.

What I/we might change:

If we did this project again, I would like to begin it in the fall. I would like to have more time to have students learn how to plan for a garden, sow cold crops, and grow crops that take 90+ days from seed to harvest.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

My favorite part of this project was seeing students be excited about growing their own food! They expressed that they wanted to build a hydroponics unit at home or begin an outdoor garden.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Teaching language (ESL) through interactive and STEAM lessons is not only a fun and engaging method, but students are more successful when they can learn language in context.
