The Problem

As soon as I step out of the beautifully preserved Orchestra Hall in Detroit, Michigan, the facade falls away. The building next door to the Hall is gone, replaced by a freshly paved parking lot. The building, next door, is crumbling and it’s only a matter of weeks before it\'s stripped down too. Detroit has long been considered a city of neglect and abandon. Recent renovation efforts especially the restoration of Grand Central have brought much needed positive attention towards Detroit. Detroit loses many historic buildings every year to create parking lot and risks demolition of important buildings such as MBAD African Bead Museum. Detroit is a fraction of the city it once was and I pondered how I could help preserve these historic buildings while promoting the city in a positive way.

Our Plan

In 2024, I partnered with Preservation Detroit, an organization that facilitates historic walking tours, to become a tour guide. Since then, I have implemented some important changes in the Eastern market tour. I facilitated a tour for University of Michigan Dearborn students so they could select a popular vendor or business to do their research podcast on. These tours do not have maps, so I am planning on creating online or distributable maps for each tour route highlighting the various attractions. Efforts to start a research/archival initiative to help preserve historic buildings are ongoing and await board approval.
