The Problem
This project is working towards more eco-friendly holiday decorations. I noticed that a bunch of the decorations in my community are plastic.

Our group will raise awareness about this issue and teach people how they can create their own eco-friendly decorations. We are going to invite people in the community to participate in handicraft sessions. At these sessions we will educate them on how to make their own decorations. We will make items from materials that participants bring (for example, wood, cloth, paper, items from nature, cardboard, and items that are no longer useful for their intended purpose). We will also accept donations of materials from individuals who do not participate in the handiwork sessions. This project will be led by myself and the other girls in my Girl Scout Troop. We will make flyers to showcase these sessions. We will also set aside time during our Girl Scout meetings to plan this project. We will also share information about this project with other Girl Scout troops, and provide instructions and samples so that they can organize handicraft sessions also.
My Roots & Shoots project was to make eco-friendly holiday decorations. I worked on this with my Girl Scout troop, and an organization called Decatur Makers. The other scouts and I came up with several fun decoration ideas, and created flyers for the main event. My school also put a notice about our project in the school newsletter. We taught people how to create the decorations at Family Makers Night , hosted by Decatur Makers. We purchased the supplies necessary for the project at a craft store and at Scraplanta Creative Reuse, a store that promotes reuse. Everybody at Makers Night had a great time. My family also hosted a booth at the world festival at my former school. We had so much fun teaching people how to make colorful wreaths and garlands out of ribbons and pinecones. Students at the school collected the pinecones for the project. One of my sample projects was a wreath made out of jar lids for our new next-door neighbors, who recently had a baby. They loved the wreath, and immediately put it up the next day. Everyone in my group enjoyed the project, and I look forward to making more decorations in the years to come.
My group learned a lot of information about climate change from this project. I also learned about cool decorations that can help save the earth. Working on this project taught me many important leadership skills as well. Decorate for the Planet was a real learning experience.
If I did this project again, I would try to include more people. I would also attempt to make my message go farther. My main goal would be to increase the number of people impacted by my project.
My favorite part of the project was during Family Makers Night. It was really inspiring to see all the cool projects people came up with. Our project definitely would not been the same without crafting night.
The only tip, I have to offer is this: "Never be afraid to work harder." If you don't give up, nothing can stop you.
