The Problem

It is very important to keep areas near water clean. This river is where the salmon migrate along the Sammamish River Trail from late summer through the fall. People bike and walk alongside the river, enjoying the beautiful scenery. It is also important for everyone to understand how crucial it is not to litter.

Our Plan

On November 8th, Roots & Shoots at Global Idea School helped clean the Sammamish River Trail, collecting three very large bags of trash—and, sadly, a lot of plastic, wrappers, and other debris.

Here is how the project went:

Students enjoyed cleaning the River Trail and searching for every single piece of litter. At the end, none of them wanted to go home—they wanted to keep cleaning! They kept asking if we could do this every weekend. Starting in November, we will organize different events once a month.

Through this project I/we learned:

It is important to keep green areas free of plastic and litter in general, as they are the home and habitat for many animals in the area, such as coyotes, bears, owls, and more.

What I/we might change:

By spending more hours cleaning, we can help protect our environment and make a real difference.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

Being together as a group, we do our part to help the environment while making an impact on the people who are biking or walking along the River Trail.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Create as many activities as possible—children and parents really enjoy participating and doing their part to help the environment.
