The Problem
Many immigrants aspire to become naturalized citizens, seeking the stability, opportunities, and sense of belonging that citizenship provides. However, the high costs associated with the naturalization process create a significant barrier for those already facing financial hardship. Application fees, legal assistance, language and civics test preparation materials, and other related expenses often make the dream of citizenship unattainable for low-income immigrants and their families. This financial strain not only delays or prevents individuals from completing the process but also limits their access to essential rights and benefits, such as voting, better employment opportunities, and full civic participation. Our project seeks to address this inequity by raising awareness of the financial challenges within the naturalization system and developing solutions that make the path to citizenship more affordable and accessible for all immigrants—regardless of income level.
Our Plan
We plan to address this issue by partnering with the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) to make the naturalization process more accessible and affordable for immigrants in our community. Through this partnership, our team will volunteer to assist residents in completing their N-400 citizenship applications, ensuring that language barriers or complex paperwork do not prevent them from applying. In addition, we will connect applicants with financial aid resources to help cover the costs of filing fees and other related expenses, reducing the economic burden that often keeps people from pursuing citizenship. To ensure accuracy and fairness, we will work alongside experienced immigration lawyers who will oversee the process and provide legal guidance when needed. Most importantly, we are committed to working one-on-one with individuals, offering personalized support throughout each step of the naturalization journey. Our goal is to empower immigrants by making the path to citizenship not only more affordable but also more approachable and supportive.
