The Problem

Too many animals are living in shelters. We want to help provide them a sense of comfort and home while they are there.

Our Plan

Produce tie blankets for all shelter animals to cuddle up with. Additionally, we will bake homemade dog treats and make cat toys to help create a bit of a warmer environment. Our hope is that as people visit, they will be able to use these things to interact with the animals and take them to their forever homes.

Here is how the project went:

I thought the project went well. The kids, from kindergarten to eighth grade, were really engaged with the activities. It was nice seeing how enthusiastic some kids were at the thought of getting to help an animal in need. We accomplished a lot, and knowing that because of the work these kids put in, the animals at the shelter will benefit, felt great.

Through this project I/we learned:

Throughout this project, I think a lot of the kids learned what it meant to be selfless. At times, they would ask if they could take the things we were making home to their animals, and we had to explain to them that these projects are going to help serve animals who don't have a warm home to go to yet. That can be tough for kids to wrap their heads around, but I think overall they took the main message of empathy and selflessness.

What I/we might change:

If we did this project again, I would expand who we were donating the supplies to. For the duration of this project, we donated to the same animal shelter, but I think it would be nice to see more animals in our community benefit from us.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

My favorite part of the project was seeing the kids put hard work into making these gifts for the animals, and seeing them really show good character traits through this project.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

A good tip is to reach out to those places you wish to benefit to see what they could really use/need. We did that with our local animal shelter, and not only did it provide us with a lot of good ideas on what to make, but it also helped them by providing the animal shelter with stuff they truly could use.
