Biography

My name is Simran Silva and I am the President of the Animal Welfare Society at my school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I have been working hard to expand the horizons of our club to incorporate conservation related activities and inspire members to learn more about the loss of biodiversity at home and abroad. I believe that developing a compassionate attitude towards all living beings is the foundation of conservation. We have taken small but important steps during these uncertain times whilst studying from home. Members have been encouraged to become more aware of their environment, photograph and document wildlife near their homes and engage in discussion.

I am particularly interested in the conservation of marine turtles. I am a frequent visitor to the southern shores of Sri Lanka where five of the seven species of marine turtle come to nest. The conservation of turtles in Sri Lanka is usually the effort of  private individuals linked to the tourism industry. With the tourism industry suffering on account of C19, poaching has become a huge problem. I wish that more could be done to save these innocent mariners.
