Biography

Sally Wenczel is the author of the environmental children’s book “Let’s Build a Rain Garden!” She received the Environmental Stewardship Award from her community and was recognized by the governor of Michigan for her work. Wenczel loves to present the book at local schools and community meetings.

Wenczel has worked in education gardens as a teacher and program director in the Detroit area for the past 12 years and has secured grants to helps the programs grow. Her garden group received the Roots & Shoots mini grant to help pay for stepping stones and mulch at the Doherty Junior Literary Garden.

Wenczel led the charge in passing West Bloomfield Township’s “Coal Tar Ordinance” which bans high PAH Coal Tar driveway sealants. She hopes that other communities will follow suit.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in English from Albion College in 2002, Wenczel wrote for publications and organizations like Plumas County History Museum, Garden Design Magazine, Traverse City Business News, Ferndale Friends, The Chaldean News, SFGate.com and EHow.com. She is working on her second book, “Dr. Buttonbush,” another environmental children’s book, this time about native plants and shoreline preservation.
