We are Mr. Burke’s 6th graders at Jack London Middle School in Wheeling. Our group engages in year-round, student-led environmental stewardship through hands-on science and community action. In the fall, students use macro photography and field surveys to study native pollinators and lead advocacy campaigns for the endangered Rusty Patched Bumble Bee. During winter and spring, students explore microclimates by starting native plants and produce indoors, transferring them into portable courtyard greenhouses. Once acclimated, crops are transplanted into outdoor raised beds and dedicated to supplying fresh produce to the Wheeling Food Pantry. Through every season, our students connect local habitat conservation directly to community food equity and civic leadership.
