Butterfly Garden Project at Stratford Landing Elementary

  • Location
    Alexandria, Virginia

The Problem

Our goal for the school year is to build a butterfly garden that will either add to the schools current "Discovery Garden" or accentuate a part of the school while providing a natural habitat for indigenous insects that will then lend towards curriculum projects within specific grade levels at the school.

Our Plan

Our group will build a butterfly garden. We have already secured a simple raised garden bed from another Roots and Shoots contingent within the city. Raised beds will be a better consideration for this project as digging on school ground may require permission from Miss Utility. As well, the school grounds are currently under construction so the garden may require moving after or during the construction has been completed. The group has discussed and planned for the materials that will be essential to the completion of the project. These include, but are not limited to: milkweed seeds (obtained), a location (identified), materials [garden bed(obtained), soil, fencing, shovels, gloves].
