The Problem

A large amount of household waste is still mixed together before collection, making recycling, composting and responsible waste processing much harder. Although waste segregation is increasingly being required by waste-management rules, having rules or separate bins does not automatically mean people follow them. Housing societies need simple systems, clear instructions and community accountability to make segregation an everyday habit.

Our Plan

Sorted Delhi will pilot a simple source-segregation system in housing societies, beginning with a small community and gradually expanding. The project will introduce clearly labelled waste streams, simple household instructions and an easy system for residents to follow. We will work with residents and Resident Welfare Associations to encourage societies to formally adopt segregation as a community rule rather than treating it as an optional environmental activity. The project will track participation and incorrect segregation, identify what prevents residents from following the system, and improve the model based on the results. Once a working model has been tested, we will create a simple guide that other housing societies can use to introduce and maintain source segregation. The long-term goal is to demonstrate that waste segregation can become a normal part of everyday community life through better systems, participation and accountability.
