The Problem

Urban development, habitat loss, drought, and extreme heat in the Rio Grande Valley continue to reduce access to water, shelter, and native habitat for migratory birds, monarch butterflies, pollinators, bats, and other beneficial wildlife. Many neighborhoods surrounding our community gardens also have limited access to green spaces and environmental education opportunities. We want to help create healthier urban habitats within our community gardens that support both wildlife and people while encouraging environmental stewardship, biodiversity, and community connection to nature.

Our Plan

Our project will create wildlife-friendly improvements across four Brownsville Wellness Coalition community gardens in Brownsville, Texas. Community members, volunteers, and youth participants will help install bird baths, bird feeders, pollinator-friendly plants, insect hotels, and small bat houses throughout the gardens. Participants will also help maintain the habitat features and learn about migratory birds, monarch butterflies, pollinators, urban biodiversity, and conservation through hands-on involvement in the gardens.
