Not everyone can afford basic hygiene products all of the time and with Kewanee being considered a disadvantaged community and with homelessness growing in our community, our Girl Scout Troop would like to make and distribute kits with travel size products to help remove some of the financial burden while providing people dignity.
Making hygiene and community care kits that will include purchase travel size toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, bars of soap, wet wipes as well as, water bottles, sunscreen, snacks, sunscreen, female sanitary products, band aids, and ointment to put inside each kit to assist individuals that might not be able to afford these items all the time.
Really well. We were able to make 60 hygiene bags with a toothbrush, toothpaste, bar of soap, deodorant, and wipes. 10 of the kits had mini first aid kits in them that went to the police department for the unhoused population along with other bags without first aid kits. We donated 211 tampons, 110 pads, 14 mini lotions, 10 packages of anti-bacterial wipes, 20 deodorants, and 10 toothbrushes and toothpastes to a local school district to be placed in bathrooms and councilor’s offices. We put a few kits in our free mini food pantry, some at City Hall, and have a few more to distribute as needed.

Try and get donations of items from local businesses also. We think these kits will be used too quickly and have no way to continue this project for now.
Delivering the kits to the police and city hall. People were very happy and said that this was a need in the community.
The police department talked with the scouts about not approaching unhoused individuals alone. Our community has many that also have mental health related conditions.
