The Problem
Our project addresses social isolation and limited outdoor engagement for seniors at Encore Living, an assisted living and memory care center in the same community as our Elementary school. Staff observations and research show that seniors benefit from nature, routine, and social interaction, yet stimulating outdoor access can be limited. At the same time, students seek meaningful ways to serve their community.
Our Plan
The Avalon Elementary Garden Club will design and install accessible raised garden beds and work alongside residents to plant and maintain herbs, flowers, and vegetables. Students will visit monthly, building relationships while caring for the garden. This project supports seniors by promoting physical activity, sensory engagement, and improved mood. It also benefits students through hands-on service learning and environmental stewardship. By connecting generations through gardening, the project strengthens community bonds while supporting wellness and encouraging sustainable practices that benefit both people and the environment and our local pollinators!
