The Problem

The US is known to be the world's largest generator of plastic waste. The average American uses 220 pounds of plastic each year. Now imagine this number being multiplied by Atlantic City’s population, which is about 38,000 right now! That is around 8.3 million pounds of plastic each year in Atlantic City alone. Plastic is a synthetic material made primarily from polymers, designed to be molded and hardened into countless forms. While convenient, its environmental cost is staggering. From releasing greenhouse gases during production and breakdown, to being ingested by wildlife, plastic pollution threatens human health, animal welfare, and entire ecosystems. Specifically, plastic pollution poses a serious threat to Atlantic City’s coastal ecosystem. Discarded plastic bags, bottles, and packaging often end up in the ocean, where they break down into microplastics that contaminate the water and harm marine life. Local wildlife, including fish and seabirds, can ingest or become entangled in plastic debris, leading to injury or death. As a coastal city, Atlantic City faces direct consequences from this pollution, making it critical to reduce plastic waste before it reaches the shore.

Our Plan

Plastic Free-AC (Atlantic City) aims to empower others to take environmental action at their own respective places. Our mission is to facilitate a plastic-free Atlantic City by campaigning to our community and local government to eliminate single-use plastic in all AC establishments. As an organization, we will educate others about the dangers of plastic, the impact it has on climate change, and how we all can do our part to help contribute to a safer environment, by coming up with other sustainable solutions. We will continue to organize regular beach cleanups to reduce pollution and protect marine life along our local coastline. In addition, we aim to distribute reusable items such as water bottles and tote bags to encourage sustainable habits and reduce single-use plastic consumption in our community. Our goal is to raise awareness, inspire eco-conscious behavior, and create a cleaner, healthier environment for both people and wildlife. We plan to expand our beach cleanups across the South Jersey area and get more people involved in the effort by continuing advocacy throughout schools and community centers in South Jersey. All in all, when we do our part, the Earth wins!
