The Problem

The problem we want to fix is the lack of access to sustainable gardening spaces and hands-on environmental learning opportunities for middle school students in our community. Many students have limited experience with growing their own food or understanding the role of native plants in supporting pollinators. Without these experiences, young people often feel disconnected from the environment and are less aware of how their choices affect local ecosystems, wildlife, and food systems. Our project will help address this need by creating a school garden that builds knowledge, responsibility, and environmental stewardship.

Our Plan

The action we are planning is to build and maintain a school garden with four raised beds—two for growing edible plants and two for native pollinator plants. Students will be directly involved in designing the layout, preparing soil, planting, watering, and caring for the garden throughout the school year. They will also help research which crops and wildflowers are best for our region and pollinators. This hands-on project will teach sustainable farming practices, provide fresh food, create habitat for pollinators, and connect students to the environment in meaningful and lasting ways.
