The Problem

Milkweed had grown unintentionally in the Pre K courtyard garden at our school in the summer of 2022. On the return to school in September, the pre k students witnessed the metamorphosis of the entire monarch life cycle. This was truly a magical experience and provoked many discussions about butterflies, their lifecycle, and their habitat. There is a large area on school grounds that had consisted only of grass and weeds. Our pto awarded a grant in order to establish a pollinator garden that Would benefit our local pollinators, support teachers and students in learning, and engage family and community members.

Our Plan

We plan to expand, grow, and maintain an area on the school grounds specifically to nurture a pollinator habitat with native plant species for a variety of NJ pollinators including the monarch butterfly. The project is a collaboration between school staff and students, and will engage family and community members as well.
