The Problem

In Sturgis, many families lack accessible opportunities to engage with environmental and community health issues in a meaningful, hands-on way. As a result, awareness and action around local sustainability, wildlife stewardship, and public well-being remain limited. Through our 2025 Summer Reading Program theme, 'Sturgis is Home,' we aim to address this gap by launching an 8-week challenge that encourages families to connect with and improve both community and environmental health—making Sturgis a healthier place for people, the land, and wildlife.

Our Plan

With support from Roots & Shoots and in partnership with the Black Hills Parks & Forests Association, we will host three interactive family workshops focused on environmental health, animal behavior, and local conservation. These sessions will deepen community understanding and spark curiosity about the natural world. Building on this learning, we will lead a hands-on citizen science field trip, giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in the field and contribute to real environmental research.
