The Problem

Our Plan

Our school industrial arts class will build bird nesting and bat roosting boxes that will help these insectivores reduce the moth population.

Here is how the project went:

Great! Students completed 12 bird boxes and 3 bat boxes and will install them in the orchard soon.

Through this project I/we learned:

Students learned about designing and executing a construction project. They also learned about orchard pest management and predator-prey relationships in an orchard ecosystem.

What I/we might change:

More emphasis on project scheduling as part of school curriculum. Perhaps change lumber selection to western red cedar.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

The fact it was a cooperative effort between Brovold Community Orchard and Alberton School.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Decide which bord.bat species you are targeting and research box designs compatible with those species.
