Biography |
I am Caroline Schio. I´m an oceanographer and the president of Monitoramento Mirim Costeiro Institute from South Brazil. In 2011 I created a pioneer citizen science program called Junior Coastal Monitoring with the purpose to provide to the children an experience to connect with the coast environment that they live in and encourage them to become a Junior Ocean Guardian. Nowadays this program has become an example of socio-environmental project and was recognized as the best project in Latin America for the Green Latin America Award in Oceans category. Since 2019 I am training educators who are replicating our educational methodology in other locations on the Brazilian coast.
My dream is to develop a Junior Ocean Guardian network around the world and connect children from all continents to share knowledge, experience and to inspire their communities to protect the Ocean. I hope children feel as part of their environment to be empowered as protectors, researchers and monitors of the beaches, so they can take care of the place they live in.
I am a dreamer and passionate about the oceans. I believe in the power of transformation that children have. My efforts are about planting a seed inside the heart of these little beings. So that in the future they could become a network of Ocean´s Guardians.
I would like to share my professional experience with other educators and young people around the world and start to develop this network.
