| Biography |
Having been born in Tampa, and raised some 20 miles from the city, I know firsthand what it means to be surrounded by something you can’t help but know very little about. As a society, we mistakenly believe that everyone in a place like Florida must have equal opportunities to engage with or understand the ocean. In reality, a range of systemic barriers actually exist. Throughout the past several years, I have worked among amazing nonprofit organizations and have founded my own non-profit, Breach the Surface. Breach has been my outlet to implement initiatives I’ve been long wanting to see within my community. Some of those efforts include: designing artivism exhibitions, developing the Shellphone Podcast, and securing funding for over 50 marginalized students to have access to marine education-based field trips. Beyond Breach, I have also worked directly with climate organizations such as ACE, Our Climate, Food and Water Watch, and Sierra Club. While working with these various organizations, I was involved in projects that included climate-forward artivism builds in Tallahassee, panel discussions with renowned organizations, and lobby meetings with officials such as Ron DeSantis.In closing, Tampa is one of the top 15 fastest growing cities in the U.S. As a Tampa native, it excites me to see this city grow.
