Roots & Shoots By the Bay
Middle and high school students are invited to join Roots & Shoots Tampa Bay and Keep Pinellas Beautiful to protect and restore our coastline & waterways:
- Habitat Restoration: Roots & Shoots will host two native habitat restoration events in the Tampa Bay watershed and distribute educational pamphlets made by students that emphasize the importance of native plants, proper placement, and the value that happy habitats bring to our coastal communities. Students will create signage to educate visitors about the critical ecological role that native habitats play. Informal surveys will also be conducted of people visiting the location regarding their awareness of the importance of the habitat.
- Seagrass Safe: During 3 student-led outreach events, students will directly engage with boaters at marinas, boat slips, and other locations to educate them on the importance of operating “seagrass safe” to prevent seagrass scarring, manatee injuries, and pollution.
- Marine Debris: Students will create and distribute a comic strip to educate children about the negative impacts of litter and the importance of reducing the use of single-use items and disposing of trash as efficiently as possible. Students will lead 3 clean up events in the watershed.
