Roots & Shoots By the Bay

A project of Roots & Shoots Tampa Bay and Keep Pinellas Beautiful, Roots & Shoots By the Bay engaged local middle and high school students in projects to restore shorelines, reduce pollution, and encourage safe boating practices.

Litter Prevention Committee

This committee brainstormed episodes of the Super Rosie comic strip designed to educate children on the harmful effects of litter and the importance of minimizing single-use items and properly disposing of waste. To reinforce this message, students hosted three cleanup events throughout the watershed.

Dune Restoration Committee

This committee hosted two native habitat restoration events within the Tampa Bay watershed, planting sea oats and native plants to make our shorelines more resilient. They also designed and distributed educational materials highlighting the importance of native plants and created an interpretive sign to inform visitors about the vital ecological functions of dunes.

Marine Education Committee

This committee learned about safe boating practices to help prevent seagrass scarring, reduce manatee injuries, and minimize marine pollution. They designed educational materials and distributed them at outreach events at local marinas to educate boaters.
