Hey everyone! I have a question about palm oil! Is there a substitute that companies can use in replacement for palm oil? If so, why don’t they? Is palm oil the cheaper option for companies?
Yes, palm oil is cheaper than other oils. Some companies use sustainable palm oil that supposedly isn’t grown in a place where rainforests were cut down, but often the “sustainable” palm oil actually has some sustainable palm oil and some palm oil that isn’t sustainable. RSPO is one label that is the partly sustainable palm oil. CSPO is a more reliable label, it is most likely sustainable. these will just be like a label on the container of food by the way!:)
Thank you so much,Olivia! This was very helpful 🙂
Of course!!
A similar oil would be coconut oil. However, palm oil is actually a pretty worthwhile and high-yield plant. That means it can produce a lot without needing much care, space or nutrient-rich soil. Unfortunately, it is what happens before these trees are planted (the deforestation) and what happens on the plantations (wildlife being killed/illegally sold, poor working conditions for the people, etc.) that is a big issue. By asking for companies to use Certified Segregated palm Oil, it is asking them to take a step towards being responsible consumers.
