The Junior Literary Garden at Doherty Elementary School was awarded a grant from the Wildflower Association of Michigan for $936.10! In spring 2022, students from Earth Club and the Literary Garden Club at West Bloomfield High School together with Doherty students and parents planted 10 flats of native wildflowers and 7 trees to expand the education garden. Wildflowers included: purple coneflower, swamp milkweed, boneset, cardinal flower, black-eyed susan, blue lobelia and joe pie weed. Trees included: Eastern redbud and American plum.

We were so excited to rip up more turf grass and fill the space with native plants! Native plants help to support the food web on which all life depends. And we’ve already seen a few monarch caterpillars munching on the milkweed:)
