Hope everyone was successful in doing a food waste audit last week, does anyone have anything to share from their experiences? For me, I saw how much of the food we threw out could be composted, and on a local scale I saw some really disheartening things. I live in San Diego by the way, and not only were food scraps being thrown out, but food was being thrown out, and for ridiculous reasons. There was an entire box of bananas that were still consumable but had minor imperfections such as brown spots. I asked the store worker, and these bananas were being thrown away, all because they were ugly. For this week, we’ll focus on advocacy in our community. Now that we’ve gotten an idea of how bad (or maybe good!?) food waste is, we can work on it on a local scale. Within our homes, it’s a good idea to do a scan of the fridge or wherever you keep perishable items, and make sure that no food is sitting there unused and about to go bad. But even if we eat everything buy, we still throw out a lot of food scraps. So some things to explore can be either backyard composting or composting at a local center. For me, my school actually accepts compost that you can store in your freezer and drop off. Everyone let me know what you plan on doing and I can help you find a place that will work for you!
